LDS Weddings: And a Temple to Top it Off!

LDS Weddings are a wonderful celebration. The bride and groom meet together in the Temple of their choice and are joined for time and all eternity.

For those not of the Latter-day Saint faith, the Temple is viewed as the most sacred of places. When you walk into a home of a church member one of the first things you notice is all the pictures of temples on the walls, and the phrase “Families are Forever”.

So when you attend an LDS Wedding it should be no surprise to see on top of the wedding cake a replica of the LDS Temple the couple was married in.

I was married in the Salt Lake Temple over 22 years ago. When my husband proposed to me, he had purchased a LDS Glass Temple Sculpture of the Salt Lake Temple. He was working at Baskin Robins at the time and had it put on top of an ice cream cake with the phrase “Let’s make it Forever” written on the cake. It was waiting for us in the display case. The fact that my husband still wants me forever is a comfort. I still want him too. I remember looking at that delicate glass sculpture. It served as a symbol and a promise of what I wanted. I wanted forever with my husband and any children we might have. Now that I’ve been married for 22 years, the thought of anything less is devastating.

I know there are some people who think it strange to see a miniature of a building standing on top of a wedding cake, but the temple is everything. Because, our families are everything.

They say your body is a Temple. If so, mine is one of those multi-functioning ones like Hong Kong.

They have a mission office, meeting areas and a temple all in one building. I too am a multi-functioning temple. I take care of my husband, the kids, our LDS Online Store and help with the LDS Temple Trips that we put together.

In the midst of all this, I’m supposed to some how find time to exercise and eat right. I’m supposed to do things to help me both physically and spiritually. Ever since I was released as the Young Women’s President in our ward, I’ve found more time for personal study of the Book of Mormon. I’s really helped with the spiritual strengthening. But I’ve been struggling with the exercise thing.

I have a younger brother who started drinking before he was even 12. A loving neighborhood woman thought it was important that young kids who are curious about drinking should have an adult around to monitor. So she let him have beer at her house whenever he wanted it. Our family had no idea. He told me later that when he took that first drink, he felt something. It was almost electric. He hid this habit all through his mission and for the first few years of his temple marriage. Just before his on going struggle came to light he and I had a discussion about the “Word of Wisdom”. He wanted to know how come people who ate to excess and never exercised were more worthy of a recommend than someone struggled with alcohol. We had a long talk, but I still remember his question.

I don’t struggle with drugs or alcohol, but I don’t always take care of the temple the Lord has given me. My husband and I are trying to go to the local rec center 4-6 times a week. We spend about 1 1/2 hours there. He burns around 600 calories and I burn around 500. I never want to be my brother’s excuse for doing what he shouldn’t.

I haven’t set foot on a scale since we started about a month ago. I have no idea if I’ve even lost weight, but I feel better. I also do an extra load of sweaty laundry every day, but it’s worth it. My husband used to take 70 mm of insulin every day. He’s down now to just over 50mm. It would be great if somehow he could get off of it altogether. We’ll see. It’s just old fashioned sweat. When you spend an hour sweating your guts out for 500 calories it makes spending 500 on candy or junk almost impossible. Give it a try.

The LDS Online Market Place is very competitive and really a small market overall. There are LDS Online Stores everywhere and more coming every day. You’d think that because of the economy there would be a shortage, but it seems to have gotten larger.

It’s true some small businesses have closed their doors, but in their place other’s have come forth.

So the other day when I was instructing a customer to type in our web address: www.buylds.com She typed it in on the google search bar. Pages came. LDS Online Stores that offered LDS Products.

Part of me wonders how in the world a little store like mine will be able to make it. But the other part is grateful for people out there putting things on the web that push all of the negative anit-mormon messages down in the search engines.

So I issue a challenge. Every LDS person out there. Blog or write an article once a week about something positive that has to do with being a member of the Church. There are millions of us. If less than 100 online stores can impact the internet like they do, imagine what the millions of members can do.

LDS Girl’s Baptism Dresses add a Fairy-like and Angel quality to your little girl.

Every little girl has a fairy like quality to her. They seem magical the way they can cast their spell. I remember my two oldest daughters dancing around the lawn in their white dresses with flowers in their hair. (I think they were dandelions). I don’t know that there is really anything more beautiful than a child.

I liked the White Dresses they were wearing. It added to the look of innocence. Later on I think they were covered in dirt , jam or chocolate. They still looked like fairies or angels, just less clean.

Now I’m looking at those two little girls graduating from College and High School respectively. When they wear their cap and gown, in my heart I’ll still be seeing two little girls in white dresses with yellow flowers in their hair.

Glow in the Dark CTR Ring

The CTR Ring that glows in the dark is a pretty cool little ring. The picture has a little more glow to it than I’ve seen. It does however glow in the dark and it’s easy to see. It’s a regular sized CTR Ring and can be found in most LDS Bookstores. I’ve checked online pricing for this ring and these are the results I get.

LDS Provident Living Experiment: Finding Moments to Ponder

I read once that Lucy Hale Smith said her son Joseph wasn’t overly studious, but he pondered the things of the spirit continually. Finding that quiet time to ponder the things of the spirit can be difficult. There are so many louder things out there. Here are some places I’ve found that help me.

Driving in the car when nobody else is with me.

Taking a shower.

Working in my office.

Waiting in the car for my kids to get out of school/practices & everything else.

It’s important to have something good to ponder. The Book of Mormon, The Ensign, conference talks, Preach my Gospel and Teaching Manuals. It seems the only time I have to read these are in the morning when my husband is getting ready for work and I haven’t gotten the kids up for family prayer yet. I’m just trying to do the best I can with what I’ve got. Sometimes it feels like the widow’s mite. Maybe if I give what I can, it will be alright.

LDS Provident Living Experiment: Speak Softly and listen

More reverence in our home. That’s the goal. I know like most places the problem usually starts at the top. That would be my husband and me. We laugh quietly during Sacrament Meeting when something is funny. We have had our family home evening lesson in the car while driving somewhere, and I like to kiss my husband in public places because it bothers my children and makes my husband blush and giggle. These aren’t horrible things, but it gives you an idea of our general attitude. And I’m discovering our general attitude comes from me…..the mom.

I don’t think it would be wise to stop having fun and enjoying the company of those around you, but the spirit is a quiet thing and I can’t hear Him as well as I could otherwise.

I have a daughter who enjoys her Seminary Class, but the teacher is struggling to finish a lesson because of the amount of unasked for participation. She’s part of the problem. She isn’t doing anything bad or mean. She just isn’t allowing the spirit to fully speak to her. She feels bad. But instead of laying it at her doorstep, I’m laying it at mine. We are addressing this as a family. A better sense of reverence and respect can only help someone. Having a lack of it can hold one back both spiritually and socially.
